Kazan Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Volgograd. Its construction began in 1896, and the consecration took place on August 23, 1899, by Bishop John of Saratov and Tsaritsyn. The church was built with donations from parishioners, after completion of construction it worked until December 15, 1939 and was the last to be closed in the city. The shrine survived the Battle of Stalingrad and, despite everything, continued to be a place of attraction for the townspeople.
The church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is the decoration of the city, the center of its spiritual power, and today it requires special attention. The facility underwent restoration several years ago, but for many years meltwater destroyed the church walls due to the lack of a drainage system and a mistake made during repairs in the 80s of the last century.
Now there are numerous paint flakes on the facade of the cathedral, there are cracks in the masonry. Most of the flaws are on the eaves under the domes due to moisture ingress through the tides. There are problems inside the cathedral as well: the magnificent paintings on the walls and ceiling are covered with cracks and soot. The building’s engineering networks – heating, lighting, ventilation – need to be completely replaced. Due to the significant wear and tear of communications, the destruction processes are proceeding rapidly.
The restoration of the 125-year-old cultural heritage site will be carried out in stages. The temple will be fully examined by the end of 2024. Comprehensive scientific research will be conducted in 2025. And only then will the development of design and estimate documentation begin.
According to the governor, all the work will be done in five years. At the same time, not only the cathedral will be restored, but also the surrounding area. The Board of Trustees will keep an eye on everything.
